10 step guide to preparing the perfect baby shower

Holding a baby shower is a wonderful way to celebrate the happy news of a baby being on the way. Baby showers are usually organised by a friend or family member. Are you looking for tips on how to plan a memorable and joyful event? We recommend following these ten steps.

1. Collaborate and gather input:. You may want to throw the baby shower as a surprise, but usually the organiser will collaborate with the expectant mum. You can discuss her preferences, theme ideas, and any cultural or religious aspects to consider. Their input will ensure that the event reflects their personality and desires.

2. Choose the venue: When selecting a venue, consider the mum-to-be's preferences, the number of guests and the season. It can be hosted at someone's home, a local community centre, a park, or even a rented event space. The location should have ample space for activities, decorations, and food. If you choose to hold the event outside, do make sure you have a wet weather plan!

3. Set a date and send invitations: Most baby showers are held during the third trimester. Send out invitations well in advance to allow guests to RSVP. Consider using digital invitations to save time and resources and collate responses easily. Setting up digital invitations usually allows you to send updates and reminders too.

4. Theme and decorations: Selecting a theme or a look adds a fun and cohesive element to the baby shower. Consider the mom's preferences and interests, such as a specific colour scheme, or a favourite children's book. Decorate the venue with balloons, banners, table centrepieces, and other relevant decorations that match the chosen theme. You can support small businesses by buying decorations on Etsy, or conserve resources by hiring decorations for the event.

5. Plan activities and games: Baby shower activities and games help create a lively and fun atmosphere. Choose games that are enjoyable, interactive, and inclusive for all guests. Classic games include Guess the Baby Food or Baby Photo Guessing Game.

6. Set the menu: Consider the dietary preferences and restrictions of the guests when planning the menu, and make sure the food is suitable to consume during pregnancy (for example, avoid cured meats). Opt for a mix of sweet and savoury finger foods, light refreshments, and a selection of beverages. Include a beautiful cake or cupcakes as a centrepiece.

7. Meaningful keepsakes and gifts: Most guests will want to bring a gift. The parents-to-be may have a baby gift register or wishlist. Some guests might want to offer to buy a high ticket item, such as a pushchair or a playmat. One thoughtful idea is to suggest guests bring a children's book instead of a traditional card, with a personalised message inside. This creates a cherished library for the baby. You could also  consider providing small favours or goodie bags for guests to take home as a token of appreciation.

8. Create a relaxing ambiance: As the event organiser, try to ensure the baby shower provides a relaxing and comfortable environment for the mum-to-be. Arrange plenty of seating areas, soft lighting, and soothing music to create a calm ambiance. Consider having a designated area for the expectant mother to rest and open gifts comfortably.

9. Capture the memories: You will probably have your hands full, so consider designating someone to be the official photographer or create a photo booth area. Capture candid moments and group photos throughout the event.

10. Thank the guests: After the baby shower, take the time to express gratitude on behalf of the expectant mum. Send thank-you notes or emails to the guests, thanking them for their presence, thoughtful gifts, and well-wishes.

We hope this helps you with baby shower planning - please let us know if you think we should add something to the list?
